Church of Saints Philip and James Orticaia

Via San Michele degli Scalzi
Pisa
Tel 050-31281

The name seems to derive from Orticaia territory invaded by nettles, or a place full of gardens (in Latin horticarium). The church, in Romanesque style dating from the twelfth century, has been amended several times, while the low bell tower was built directly on the wall of the ‘600.

The facade is made of stone at the bottom, brick on the upper and appears asymmetrical opening of a square window on the left of the door.

The interior has a single nave, with baroque frescoes attributed to the Melani brothers, including that of the Conversion of St. Ranieri, who seems to have just happened in this church.
